Goodbye, Sarah

Sarah Palin resigns the governorship of Alaska effective July 25 or 26 (link to follow).

There is some speculation that she does this because she wants the freedom to enrich herself and her family with her newfound fame. This fits the “Barracuda” storyline – a woman for whom the governorship was “the big times” as was her shot at the Vice Presidency.

There is, however, another storyline…the one in which the realities of raising a baby with downs syndrome sinks in, and maternal instinct kicks in. Many mothers of disabled children were dismayed at the idea that she would attempt the office of VP while having such a disabled child in her care.

The two storylines are not mutually exclusive. In either case, the nation dodged a bullet in NOT electing the McCain-Palin ticket.

As Palin Tanks, More Thanks for Hillary

Published by QueenTiye under sexism

Hillary’s historic candidacy has established, permanently, the viability of a woman candidate.  I think I knew this already.  In fact, I’m sure I did.  But it’s driven home more forcefully today, as I think about Sarah Palin.

A commenter on Open Left referenced Walter Mondale’s failed candidacy in an entirely different context – but it brought to mind that Mondale also had a female vice presidential candidate.  Had Hillary’s campaign not been so successful, it would have been very easy to correlate McCain’s current campaign woes and Mondale’s prior ones as having a common cause – a woman on the ticket.  But the voting public is firmly innoculated against that now.

Just a side thought, and a moment in which I can sincerely say, thank you, Senator Hillary Clinton.

Answering Sarah

Published by QueenTiye under Uncategorized

I started to answer Sarah Palin’s speech point for point, but it just got tiring.  Here are tools to find out the facts for yourself:

But these statements need answering:

This world of threats and dangers is not just a community, and it doesn’t just need an organizer.

Hard not to take that personally, but I long ago promised a post on the submect of community organizing and I’m delinquent.  It will be up by Monday, in honor of my dad, who I will bury that day.

In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers.

And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change.

Yet another character insult, and this one highly offensive.  I wish John McCain has used his career to stay the course of change, but instead he is now lock-step with the far right of the republican base – the very same who have been running the country for 12 of the last 20 years, including the last 8.   But alas, it was not to be.

What does he actually seek to accomplish, after he’s done turning back the waters and healing the planet?

Frankly, though the nation may not be fully appreciative, if this were “all” that was accomplished – notwithstanding, this will have been a LOT to accomplish.
