One of the joys of my childhood was singing in the choir in church. Much of the music that I remember is now outdated, and can’t be bought – and back then I would tape music on cassette tapes – many of which are now damaged beyond repair or use. But the miracle of YouTube is that some of what was out there is now recorded for YouTube. This minor miracle is because choirs around the country sing good choir songs, without regard for the datedness (and frankly – it just doesn’t get old. Edwin Hawkins “Oh Happy Day” preceded my birth and is still a favorite of mine!). And of course, some people are recording their old records (see James Cleveland’s “All the Way”). Whatever the case – I’m capturing some of my favorites here, on their own page, since this has very little to do with the Obama Project.
Cause Me to Taste, O My Lord (Baha’i Gospel!)
And another one, that’s just wonderful:
Another audio only clip, and if anyone browsing has a choir doing this version of this song, please do share a link!
His Eye Is On The Sparrow
Here’s another favorite… I didn’t sing this one – but this was one that could wake you up in the morning and set you on your way with a smile on your face!
Rev Clay Evans- Heal the land/Pentecost
Yolanda Adams: “Victory”
Yolanda Adams: “Never Give Up”
T.D. Jakes on the Rachel Maddow Show
Rev. T.D. Jakes Preaching
All The Way – Rev. James Cleveland and Milton Biggham
I sang this one as a member of the SUNY Binghamton Gospel Choir. A woman named Anna had a big beautiful tenor voice and sang the lead.
Uncloudy Day – Myrna Summers and VOBB Choir
(I always wanted to sing this one but could never convince any choir directors on this point. At the end, when she says “you missed it” – she means the choir wasn’t paying attention – following the director and not just going by memory of how the song goes is part of the skill and fun of singing in the choir.)
Here’s the original of the same song – a younger Myrna Summers and Refreshing Spring C.O.G.I.C. Choir singing Uncloudy Day.
The harmonies here are just wonderful.
Ministers Alliance Choir performing Donald Lawrence’s There Is No Way
Again when I was in Binghamton, we toured to various choir events – and other choirs performed this. IIRC – Cornell’s choir sang this one – brought the house down.
And here’s the same song (There Is No Way) by the New Life Inspirational Gospel Choir:
