As Palin Tanks, More Thanks for Hillary
Hillary’s historic candidacy has established, permanently, the viability of a woman candidate. I think I knew this already. In fact, I’m sure I did. But it’s driven home more forcefully today, as I think about Sarah Palin.
A commenter on Open Left referenced Walter Mondale’s failed candidacy in an entirely different context – but it brought to mind that Mondale also had a female vice presidential candidate. Had Hillary’s campaign not been so successful, it would have been very easy to correlate McCain’s current campaign woes and Mondale’s prior ones as having a common cause – a woman on the ticket. But the voting public is firmly innoculated against that now.
Just a side thought, and a moment in which I can sincerely say, thank you, Senator Hillary Clinton.
